Welcome to Campus Notices
Reminder, use your Novell username and password to
post or cancel Campus Notices.
Q: First, what are Campus Notices?
A: A means of communicating with groups of e-mail recipients at
Washington and Lee. It allows senders to target those students,
faculty, or staff for whom a message is relevant, without bothering
others. To minimize e-mail traffic, it consolidates messages for
delivery in one e-mail, sent in the early morning each day.
It also controls the rate of delivery, in order not to slow down
the e-mail server computers.
Q: How are Campus Notices different from Broadcast Mail?
A: Broadcast
Mail is a special e-mail message containing urgent or official information
from the University. Anyone at W&L can initiate a Campus Notice;
only authorized personnel can send Broadcast Mail.
Q: How do I send a Campus Notice?
A:
Go to the
Campus Notices web page. Choose Submit a notice. Log in with your Novell username
and password where instructed.
Now, tell how
and to whom you want the message delivered. You can queue a message
for delivery on some future date. The default delivery is the next
scheduled delivery--the same day if you enter it before 8 am, the
next day if after 8 am.
Enter a brief
Subject line for the message. This line will be in the summary information
at the top of the day's notices, and people may use it to decide
whether or not to read your message.
Choose the recipients.
Only those recipients selected will receive the message.
Write the message.
Remember that recipients will nearly always appreciate brevity.
Proofread your message to make sure you have included important
details and gotten dates and times right. It's a good idea to write
the text of your message in advance on your word processor and then
copy and paste it into the text field here. It's also a good idea
to identify your connection to the announcement (your job title
or your office in a student organization, for example).
Click Submit Notice.
Q: Where do I say who is sending the notice?
A: The
Campus Notice system will supply that information. You will be identified
by your name and e-mail address. Anonymous messages are not permitted.
Q: What is appropriate for a Campus Notice?
A: Here are some examples: Physical Plant might announce the temporary
closing of a road. University Computing might ask Williams School
users for help in tracking down some technical problem or tell seniors
how to extend their accounts beyond graduation. Others might announce
memorial services for a member of the faculty, alert the Law School
to the visit of a Supreme Court justice, or announce special job-search
services available to College and Williams School juniors.
Q: What's not appropriate?
A: Opinions. Political campaigning except for student elections as regulated by the Executive Committee. Objectionable material.
Repetition of the same notice. The promotion of scheduled campus
events is a gray area. See the next question.
Q: Will anyone review my Campus Notice?
A: At this time, no. Users are being asked to judge the appropriateness
of their own messages.
Q: Can I choose not to receive Campus Notices?
A: Yes. Choose the Block/Unblock option. Be aware that you may miss
notices of specific importance to you if you choose to block delivery.
Q: Can I subscribe to receive Campus Notices?
A: Yes. Choose the Subscribe to Campus Notices link to the left. Be aware that you may not post Campus Notices if you are not Faculty, Staff or a Student at W&L.
Q: Can I react or respond to a notice?
A: The Campus Notice message of the day will come as e-mail from
the Postmaster@wlu.edu. This is, of course, only an automated process.
The sender of each notice is identified, with e-mail address. Responses
should be directed to him or her.
Q: Can I change my Campus Notices password?
A: Yes. Choose the Change Password link.
Q: How do Law School Notices differ from Campus Notices?
A: Campus Notices is a university-wide resource. Law School Notices is a communications resource for messages that are intended only for Law School faculty, staff and students. Messages that need to go to members of the Law School as well as other University recipients should be posted to Campus Notices. See http://law.wlu.edu/administration/lawnotices/ for the use of Law School Notices.
