Grades a little low? New GPA Standards and Academic Probation
Rebekah Powers <rjpowers@wlu.edu>
Have you ever had a bad term where your term or cumulative GPA fell
just a little below 2.0? In the past you might have avoided
Academic Probation. This fall the new GPA standards, which were
passed by the Faculty last year, will go into effect for Academic
Probation and Automatic Rule. Please note two new changes:
1) If the term or cumulative grade-point average falls below 2.000
(for all class years) the student will be put on Academic Probation.
2) First-year students whose first-term grade-point average falls
below 1.000 will be placed on Automatic Rule, i.e. academic
suspension from W&L for one year.
If you fall in either of the categories above, I encourage you to
work hard through the end of final exams. Take advantage of all the
resources available to you – faculty office hours, talking with your
academic adviser, peer tutoring, counseling, speaking with a Student
Affairs dean or Academic dean. Consider ways in which you can
curtail extra-curricular activities and focus on your course work.

The CS Dept presents EMILY GIBSON HILL (University of Delaware)
Paulette Rinderknecht <rinderknechtp@wlu.edu>
Emily will talk about "Developing Natural Language-based Software
Analyses & Tools to Expedite Software Maintenance" on Fri, Dec 4th at
11:15 in Parmly Hall, Room 405. Lunch will be provided.
Abstract: Today’s software is large and complex, with systems
consisting of millions of lines of code. New developers to a software
project face significant challenges in locating code related to their
maintenance tasks of fixing bugs or adding new features. Developers
can simply be handed a bug and told to fix it—even when they have no
idea where to begin.
We can significantly reduce the cost of software maintenance by
reducing the time and effort to find and understand code. In this
talk, I will outline the challenges in finding and understanding code
in a large software project as well as present some software
engineering tools that can help. Specifically, I will present
techniques that leverage the textual information from comments and
identifiers as well as program structure to create intuitive software
engineering and program comprehension.
