End-of-Term Grading Notes to Students
Barbara Rowe <browe@wlu.edu>
1) In an effort to expedite the grade verification process and to
submit grade reports via e-mail to students in a timely manner, some
WebAdvisor screens will have restricted access while grades are
being verified. Once the grading processes are completed, students
will be able to access their grades as usual.
The dates of restricted access will be from 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, June
2 until noonish Wednesday, June 3, and again from 3:00 p.m. Friday,
June 5 to Monday morning, June 8. Thank you for your understanding
during this temporary and necessary inconvenience.
2) Please note: At the end of the term, as faculty enter grades on
courses, the graded courses "disappear" from the student schedule.
Once the grades are verified and rolled into the new cumulative gpa -
the graded courses will show up again in Academic Course History and
Grades by Term.
3) Please remember that W&L does not send student grade reports
home. You may share your grades with your family (and are encouraged
to do so) by forwarding them a copy of the e-mail grade report or by
requesting that a transcript be sent home (see the Transcripts link
from our Web page -
http://registrar.wlu.edu/policies/transcripts.htm - for the policy
and a printable order form).
If you have any questions, please contact the University Registrar's
office at registrar@wlu.edu .

Raise your Gender IQ (and grab free breakfast) this morning!
Robin Le Blanc <leblancr@wlu.edu>
Do some fraternity initiation practices contribute to a campus climate in which sexual assault
occurs at a high rate? Why does being white and well off put a woman at greater risk for
developing anorexia? Do girls enjoy hookups as much as boys do?
Ideas about differences between men and women shape all of our lives, sometimes in
troubling ways. Shouldn't we think more carefully about gender in the world around us? The
students in Introduction to Women's Studies will help you do just that at their end-of-term,
gender awareness poster session in the Elrod Commons living room, Monday, June 1, 9:30 -
11:30. Grab juice and a pastry while you learn more about how we can see and solve gender
problems. Sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program. All members of our
campus community on both the law and undergraduate campuses are welcome to attend.

Habitat for Humanity truck in front of BDG to accept donations
Amy Richwine <arichwine@wlu.edu>
Rockbridge Area Habitat for Humanity will be accepting any personal
items (bedding, fans, computers, clothes, food, laundry accessories,
etc.) from student dorm rooms or apartments. Instead of throwing in
the dumpster the stuff that you are not taking home, drop it off at
the Habitat for Humanity truck at the BDG Quad. Habitat will
distribute items to other non-profits in the area.
The truck will be at BDG all day from Friday, May 29 through Monday,
June 1. Feel free to drop off stuff at your convenience. If you
want Habitat to pick up the larger items, please call Jane Ann at 461-
3118. Donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the
law.

Positive Observations
Jason Rodocker <jrodocker@wlu.edu>
The following comments are from the Positive Observations BOX (P.O.
Box) that sits permanently in the Elrod Commons living room. Please
submit comments to the box on any piece of paper or electronically
to jrodocker@wlu.edu.
* I would like to personally thank the wonderful people in
University Counseling, specifically Dr. Luder and Dr. Sayre, for
their support, encouragement and advice during tough times. Both
have reached out to me in ways that are not required of them and
regularly go unnoticed for their kind deeds. God Bless you both.
* There was great attendance at the benefits meetings. It seems
that University Human Resources is truly committed to providing a
complete benefits package to its employees, and it seems like the
employees are responding well and actively engaging in the
discussion and process.
* Zaq Lawal is truly an amazing person who genuinely cares about
others and offers great advice.
* Lee Neilson is the best person a student can ever ask to work
with!!!
* What an AMAZING job (with a ton of hard work) facilities
management did at law commencement. Once the decision was made to
move the ceremony inside, the whole crew had to literally work their
bums off to get everything moved and ready to go! Good job!
* Thanks to Dean Dawn Watkins for everything she does and her
cheerful attitude.
* My advisor, Professor Rebecca Harris, in the politics department
has been an outstanding person to guide me throughout my time at
Washington and Lee. She has even been generous enough to invite me
to her home and allow me to relax and do work there. She is also a
great cook and has a really cool husband!
* I love the way April Washburn and the other workers in the
University Bookstore are always so nice and greet students with a
smile.
* Professors at W&L (such as Professor Cintron, Professor Miranda,
Professor Thompson, Professor Jackson, and many others!) are very
understanding and see students as real people.
* Professor Wayne Thompson is a great guy. He is funny, interesting
and I am really enjoying his class this term!
* The nurses at the health center (especially Tad and Barbara)
deserve a big THANK YOU for all they do on a daily basis to assist
students when they are not feeling well. Thanks!!!!
* Isaiah Goodman is the definition of what a role model is supposed
to be.
* I appreciate Traveler Rides. They have gotten me home when I
needed it most. I have never heard of any other place that provides
this level of service. We need to be sure not to take them for
granted and to act with respect and appreciation. Thank you!
* I am going to miss Jamila Seaton and Grace Andrews when they
graduate. Congrats and Good Luck in the future!

June Meditation Class
Barbara Rowe <browe@wlu.edu>
June Buddhist Meditation Class: Training in Inner Peace
We will learn the inner peace and lightness of mind that come from
meditation. Through listening to Buddha's teachings and practicing
the meditations, we will experience increasingly peaceful and
beneficial states of mind, and that together form the entire
Buddhist path to enlightenment. In this way, we can transform our
daily lives, fulfill our spiritual potential, and find lasting
happiness.
For beginners as well as those wishing to further develop their
personal mediation practice. Each class is self-contained and there
is no need to enroll or to have attended previous classes.
$10/class (W&L students attend free).

person in your department responsible for getting the invoices into
the Business Office and you will be out of the office some or all of
this period in July, please plan now for someone to back you up and
get the invoices in by July 13. Time is a very precious and limited
thing for us in July before the auditors arrive for their annual
visit, thus anything that will aid in the timely receipt of
information will be greatly appreciated.

categories: (1) Outstanding Faculty, (2) Rising Star, and (3)
Teaching with Technology. W&L is allowed to nominate three in
category (1), and one of the three could be in category (3). We are
also allowed one separate Rising Star nomination (category (2)). To
be a Rising Star, the nominee must be in no more than his/her sixth
year of continuous service as a full-time faculty member and must be
in at least the third year of continuous faculty service in Virginia
at the time of nomination.
Your nomination should describe briefly how the nominee meets the
SCHEV criteria which include a record of superior accomplishment in
four areas: (i) teaching; (ii) discovery; (iii) integration of
knowledge and (iv) service. Because so many faculty members excel in
one or more of these areas, successful candidates typically have
innovative approaches to their work as well an extraordinary level
of overall accomplishment in all four areas. Please send your
nominations to the Provost's Office at anytime but no later than
July 1, 2009. A committee of previous winners and Deans will assist
the Provost in deciding which nominees most strongly meet the SCHEV
criteria. This early call for nominations will give the candidates
selected to represent W&L a head start on preparing the nomination
file which is quite time-consuming. Completed nominations are due
October 7, 2009. More information on this award program, including
criteria, nomination requirements, and a list of 2009 winners is at

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR RESPONSIBLIITIES ARE W/YOUR MICROFRIDGE?
Kathryn Grow <kgrow@wlu.edu>
To: All students with Microfridge rental units
From: The Melvin Corporation, melvincorp@embarqmail.com
The Melvin Corporation is scheduled to pick up refrigerators in W&L
residence halls beginning June 4th. As stated in the lease
agreement, the unit must be clean and ready for pick up then.
Please follow the instructions outlined below in preparing your
Microfridge.
1. Notify the Melvin Corporation of any room changes or damages at
540-463-3693 or melvincorp@embarqmail.com.
2. Remove all food, drinks and ice from the unit.
3. Unplug the Microfridge and thoroughly clean the unit inside and
out. Remove all stickers, tape and magnets. As stated in the lease
agreement, a $25 cleaning fee will be assessed on any units that
require cleaning.
4. Check to insure that all the parts are accounted for; ice trays,
scraper, door bars, microwave ring and plate. Remember you will be
charged for any missing pieces.
5. Leave the doors of the unit open so that the refrigerator can dry
and will not mold. Place a chair in front of the open doors to
insure they will stay open until the unit is picked up.
6. Leave the unit in your LOCKED room.
We hope that you have enjoyed using the Microfridge this year. If
you are interested in renting one for next year, watch the mail this
summer for the forms and return them to the Melvin Corporation.
Thank you for your patronage.

Ride your bicycle. Forty percent of trips made by car are less than
two miles. Conserve resources and get a workout by combining errands
with exercise. Bike to the post office, drug store, or office
whenever possible.
Wear a pedometer. This handy tool counts your steps and motivates you
to get active. Aim for at least 10,000 steps daily (that's about 5
miles)-- the activity level recommended for good health. Register
for W&L's summer fitness program- "Walking Works." Contact Patti

Paddle, Tube, Ski, Boat or… the James River for a Good Cause
Sydney Brooks <sbrooks@wlu.edu>
On July 11th, 2009, many volunteers will take part in the Second
Annual James River Runoff Rundown as a benefit for the James River
Association, a Richmond-based non-profit conservation organization
whose mission is to safeguard the James River from the headwaters to
the Bay.
The idea of the Rundown is simple. River enthusiasts from across
the Commonwealth will paddle, boat, tube, ski, sail or otherwise
cover small sections of the James River such that, taken in concert,
the entire length of the James River (all 340-miles) will be
traversed in one day. As part of their Rundown, River Runners may
observe water quality, view wildlife, and simply enjoy the river.
Whether your contribution is a lazy three-mile float from Springwood
to Buchanan, an intense whitewater kayak through downtown Richmond,
a fishing trip with your friends in a skiff below the Enon bridge or
a sunset cruise to the Chesapeake Bay, everyone is encouraged to
participate in the 2009 JRA Runoff Rundown.

Annual James River Runoff Rundown as a benefit for the James River

Connect 97 dial-up service ends on Tuesday
Jeffrey Overholtzer <joverholtzer@wlu.edu>
Connect97, W&L's dial-up service for off-campus access to the
Internet, will be discontinued at the end of business on Tuesday,
June 30.
Only about a dozen people still regularly use the dial-up service,
which although free to members of the W&L community is no longer
attractive compared to the high-speed commercial services now
available. However, for W&L employees and students who still want
inexpensive dial-up service, Information Technology Services has
arranged a discounted dial-up rate of $9.95 a month with Rockbridge
Global Village, one local vendor.
For more information about network connectivity on or off campus,
contact the Information Desk at x4357 or http://help.wlu.edu .
