A RESTFUL PLACE
Loretta Simpson <simpsonl@wlu.edu>
A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD
Loretta Simpson
If you want a quiet place to rest away from the noise of motels near
the interstate, I have just the place for you. I have available two
(2) bedrooms in my home. Each have their own full bathroom.
Located 5 miles from W&L in very quiet community with easy access to
main roads. Would do a continental breakfast upon request at no
additional charge. Great for Visiting Professors, Alumni, or
visiting parents. Would also consider someone outside the W&L
community if recommended by W&L employee. Contact Loretta Simpson
for more information at X-8891 or simpsonl@wlu.edu

Free Art Books
Pamela Simpson <simpsonp@wlu.edu>
George Bent and Pam Simpson have switched offices (he is in Wilson 3017 and she is in

a note on the top of the pile, so you will know you are in the right place. We hope those who

Buying a new car? Wan't an easy $4,500 credit toward purchase?
Aaron Bruce Cook <cookab@wlu.edu >
My brother is selling a '88 Mitsubishi Montero. It qualifies for
the federal CARS (Cash for Clunkers) program: it runs, has been
registered and insured for a year, and is rated under 18 mpg.

You can trade it in toward the purchase of a new car and the dealer
will give you a $4,500 credit from the government ($3,500 in some
cases if you buy a car with low fuel efficiency). You don't have to
fill out any government paperwork; the dealer is responsible for
that.

Also, you will be helping the environment.

Will sell for 2,250 (half of the credit you can get) or best offer.

Call 520-9970 and ask for Bruce Cook, or email bcook@vfpinc.com.

Looking for decent roadbike
Alan Marco <marcoa@wlu.edu>
I'm looking for a decent roadbike for training and possible novice
triathlon competition. I'm not aiming to win, but want something
designed for real roadwork, as opposed to commuting.

Brake lever shifters a plus, and sub-23 lbs. Something suitable for
5'10" male.

Ideal bike would be from a real biker who's upgrading, or someone
who likes to be high quality stuff but then uses it a few times and
it sits in the garage (you know who you are). I can take it off your
hands!

Budget is an issue for me, so I really have to go used instead of
new.

Have you thought of taking Japanese?
Rebekah Powers <rjpowers@wlu.edu>
Yookoso and welcome to W&L. Perhaps you took French or Spanish in
high school and want to try a new language. Have you thought of
taking Japanese? We offer a full four years of Japanese language
courses along with several courses of literature in translation
(LIT). Language courses have small enrollments where you have close
interaction with the faculty and can actually learn all four
skills. In addition, we’re one of the very few universities with an
authentic Japanese tearoom where you can take a tea course that
fulfills a required HL (Literature) requirement for the FDRs.
Contact Professor Ujie in the Dept. of EALL, ujiek@wlu.edu, or
Associate Dean Janet Ikeda, ikedaj@wlu.edu, for more information.
First-year beginning Japanese is listed as JAPN 111. Also, check
out photos of the tearoom at http://tearoom.wlu.edu or go to the
Dept. of East Asian Languages & Literatures (EALL) website.

First-Year Seminars Just for You
Michelle Barron <mbarron@wlu.edu>
Thinking about courses during the pre-registration process for your
first term at Washington and Lee University can be an exciting
exercise. Have you thought of imported and homegrown American
religions, have you thought to trace the evolution of the highly
charged art form known as the “portrait,” have you thought deeply
about the concept of honor in a historical and philosophical
context, have you examined various religious traditions on death and
dying, and exactly what is poverty from a domestic and global
perspective? Please take a few minutes to consider the First-Year
Seminars, which are designed just for you and are offered this
fall. You can find a full listing at: http://thecollege.wlu.edu
If you have any questions contact Associate Dean Ikeda,
